After the monthly gathering day, we needed to lose some of the calories that we gained. And guess what, the next day (10/15/06) we had our 2006 cancer walk. What a coincidence. :) For some reason, a lot of people walked REAL fast this year. I had to walk real fast too. You know, peer pressure. LOL. Note to people taking photos, take photos early on so you have a better chance of having a GROUP of yellow t-shirts walking together. View the photos here. October's monthly gathering took place at Michee's house. It was a vegetarian pot luck night and so a variety of dishes appeared on the dinner table. The article we read and discussed on that night was titled something like "Green and red light" (I don't remember. =P). If you think about it, our life is a bit like driving. At times, you may encounter a lot of red lights (analogous to having a lot of obstacles in life) or you may get a series of green lights in a row (analogous to having no problems at all). No matter you see green or red, eventually, the light will turn to the other color if you have enough patience. Oct. is Ellen's birth month, so we also had a cake to celebrate her bday. We had a lot of food left on that night. Thank you, Michee, for doing the cleaning up afterward. :) I'm currently trying out some free photo hosting sites on the web. So the photos will not be on this web site. Click the following link to see the photos. View Photos - Caber

Even though this was not a NY YAD event, but since the people who went were all mostly YADs and since Lin requested, I will post the photos I took here. So on 10/07/06, we went hiking on this mountain in NJ called Breakneck. The NY YADs went there last earlier this year already, being my first time there, I realized why it's called Breakneck, it's because you can break your neck climbing the beginning part of this mountain. =) From my photos, you can't see why but that was because I was TOO SCARED to take photos. And since I was the last person on the rock climbing team, I couldn't take pictures of anyone climbing even if I dared to take my camera out. HAHAHA~~~ But I think someone else have photos. If you are one of them, please share lor. -Caber View Albums "Kimchee" video (by Fanny) http://www.youtubecom/watch?v=ZvGEwRzTjGE

A Message from our President, Jenny:

    Dear Everybody,

Time passes so quickly. I hope everyone has had a good summer! For me, it's been a very unforgettable summer. We did a very good job at the Taiwan youth group conference. I'm sure that some of you heard that news already. But the new season is going to start for us--we have to get back into action. We will have a meeting on Sept. 10, Sunday at 1:30.

    The meeting agenda is:

    1. youth group shares experiences from Taiwan. We are very honored that at the conference they gave the NY youth group a few projects for us to finish.
a - we have been asked to host a North and South American Youth Group Conference
b - we have to come up with a project for IBPS-YAD to serve those living in poverty overseas (such as places like Brazil, Africa, Viet Nam, etc.); I believe that Justin would like to give us a general proposal on this.
c - white elephant--thank you to all those who helped do such a good job on this project; we haven't finished, there's a little more to do. We have to continue accepting and encouraging more people to enroll in this project. We also have to come out with a 7 minute CD and short handbook for introducing and recruiting new participants into this program. Also, we need to develop a more detailed study book.
    2. We have to plan all of the activities for the new season.
    3. Evan shares his Taiwan experience also. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
Please all come to the meeting--it's very important for the start of the new season. Hope you are all well and see you all soon!!!!

      Jenny

    Hi Everyone~

Hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. I believe all of us have returned from Taiwan and we lots to share with you all. The first, is the video for the dance everyone practiced really hard for before and during our trip. It was performed on the very last day of the conference, during the Farewell luncheon. The video is approximately 221 MB large in size, which is too large to be uploaded to youtube.com for viewing. Nonetheless, many of you had express wishes to view this and keep a copy, so I have uploaded the file for you all to download. Please follow the link below to download. If you have any questions or problems with downloading, please let me know.

    Video Download Link

Special Thanks to Justin who arranged the music and choreographed the dance. Also, Fanny who helped us record this full version of our performance! Hope everyone enjoy it!!!

The 2006 Summer camp is finally over. We've had a long flight. Traveled to Europe, Taiwan, Australia and Africa and back to US. I'm sure all the crews and "most" of the passengers (kids) are MAD tired. I know I am. Along the way, we met treacherous turbulance, hot and humid weather and even electricity outage. But we all made it back alive and well. We arrived Africa on July 4th. While there, we started a camp fire on a day that was supposed to rain but didn't. It was great but we missed fireworks on July 4th. So let's give us a "Loving fireworks". CLAP-CLAP _ CLAP-CLAP-CLAP _ CLAP-CLAP-CLAP-CLAP _ CLAP-CLAP SHOOOOOOOO~~~ _ BOM BOM BOM~~ LOL For those of you who want to see the photos, please be patient. I took way too many in five days and will need time to process them. Since I am going away again next week, I don't believe I'll be able to finish and upload the photos before I leave in the coming Monday. So, if you don't see any photos on Monday, please check back periodically after 7/15. Peace. (FYI, I use "peace" because we had a girl camper (Vivian from Parrot Team) who does the hitting chest twice and giving the peace sign. It was very cool and hilarious. LOL) -- Caber

We've had our 2006 summer camp training on 5/27 and 5/28 at the Flushing temple. While we did not see some of the past conselors and staffs, we had some new faces this time. As a result, this year's training group stilled seemed quite large. This month will be Frank Yao and Vivian Khu's birthday and so we got a cake to celebrate after the training camp ended. On 5/13/06, we've had our first ever mother's day cook off competition. Being the first time, the competition definitely had room for improvements but I have to say it turned out better than I had expected. A total of 7 teams entered the competition. The teams competed not only in cooking, they also competed in mother-child trivia questions. The whole event was filled with laughter and moving moments and I am sure most people who were there enjoyed the experience. View Albums -- Caber

On 5/7/2006, the NY temple had it's Buddha's Birthday celebration. The weather was great although a bit chilly because of the wind, bad for those who were sick, me included. :( We had 4 booth locations this year. One for food, one for games, one for cute bags and the like, and one for a food item named after a place in Taiwan. :) It was a long day for us as many people went to the temple early (8:30 am) to rehearse for the offering and to help setup the booths. Thank you all who helped out on this event. I was constantly walking among our booths and I thought that Tom was very dedicated at watching the cute bag booth. Tom, my hat off to you. April 15th, 2006, a beautiful 70+ degrees day. We held this month's monthly gathering this day at Menly and Vivian's house. Due to the many events we have coming up, we again, arrived the place early for a YAD/TD meeting. As we ended the meeting and entered the dinning room, the table was full of dishes. They were beautifully presented and looked very tasty. Unfortunately, a couple of us, including me, were not able to stay for the dinner and so I did not really taste the food and I do not have any photos for people to see. If anyone has photos and put them on the web, send me the link and I'll add the link here. Before we left the house, however, we were given some spring rolls and chocolate strawberries on stick. The chocolate strawberrys on stick were prepared by Vivian. They were meant to be desserts and supposed to come out after everyone finished dinner. Since some of us had to leave early, we were given this special treat first. The chocolate strawberries tasted refreshing on a hot Sunny day. -- Caber

    Help Wanted

Seeking baby sitters to care for our NY YAD president's future baby.

Begin date: May or June, 2006
    Pay: $0.

    Email your resume to us.
I'm just kidding about the ad on the left. I'm not sure if it's appropriate to put this here. If not, some one let me know and I'll terminate this section, ok?

For those that don't know, our beloved president, Jenny, is going to have a baby in a couple of months. So the NYYAD/TD members gave her a baby shower this past Saturday, 4/8/2006, at her house. We had vegetarian hotpot for dinner. While enjoying dinner, the large plasma TV had "Chicken Little" on. (I vow to get one of those flat panel TV in the future.). Shortly after dinner, it was time to open up all the gifts. It was quite fun and interesting seeing all the gifts that people brought. During the gifts-opening ceremony, so many cameras were out taking pictures. It was as if Jenny was a super star.

I will upload some photos if this section does not get terminated. LOL.

    Photos posted.

This month's gathering took place at "Tom's Crib" on 3/11/05. "Tom's Crib" is a 3 bed room apartment that Tom shares with his landlord. The living room was decorated by Tom's landlord. I thought it was pretty nice.

We started a YAD/TD meeting at around 4:15ish discussing 2006 Children's Summer Camp and some other upcoming events that we have. Michee had made some cookies and brought it with her. The cookies were soft, had the right amount of sweetness and were mixed with cranberries (I LOVE berries...any kind). They were yummy. By the end of the meeting, the cookies were gone.

For dinner, Tom's mom made some delicious dishes and delivered them to "Tom's Crib". We sincerely thank Tom's mom for doing all that work. I wished Tom did the cooking though. =D

After we had food, we started the study group. Venerable Miao Zhong guided us through two articles, "Accepting Reality" and "多想想別人的好,忘記別人的不好 (Think more of other's good, forget those of the bad)". I will summarize "Accepting Reality" by writing out the last sentence in this article. "By accepting reality and being optimistic and progressive, we make up for our shortcomings." And for the other article. A small conflict between you and another person can sometimes make you forget all the good things that the other person has done for you. When this happens, think about all the good qualities that the other person has and you may just forget about the conflict.

During our past Sunday meeting we discussed in more detail of our children's summer camp, the IBLYAC and other future events. We also had a post ancestral offering ceremony meeting where we, all the participants, discussed and watched the ceremony, with refreshments on the side. For Summer Camp, we had a unanimous vote upon the group names, all surrounding something with toys. If you want to find out the names you're just going to have to join us! Next was the IBLYAC, which everyone is excited about, the time when friends from all around the world get to see each other again. Also a time where we can all learn more about Buddhism and how is effect us, young adults. Beyond that there was the preparation of our Buddhism retreat, being held in our upstate NY temple, as well as our training camp for our annual children's summer camp. We also discussed the annual mother's day/Buddha's birthday celebration, mother’s day cook off and much more upcoming events; don't want to give it all away now.

2006 BLIA Basketball Tournament Reflections (by Wanda Lo)

6 teams, 42 players and only 1 champion team. Who will take home the first place trophy and prize?
That's the million dollar question on 1/8/2006's BLIA basketball tournament. The tournament started at 1:30pm and ended by 7:15pm. After numerous elimination rounds, the question was answered by Columbia TSA's team. Congrats to the Columbia team. The NY-TD team captured the not too shabby second place. Congrats to the NY-TD team too.

During the semi-final between the boy scout team and the NY-TD team, the players on both teams put up a fierce fight for a chance to go into the final. It was a game so intense that I do not know how to put it into words. The NY-TD finally won by two baskets.

After the semi-final match, the players on the NY-TD team were exhausted. However, due to time constraint, they were not allowed much rest before having to play the final match. As the final went on, some of the best players on the NY-TD team had to retire due to cramping. Despite great effort from the NY-TD team, it just couldn't match the faster, taller and well-rested Columbia TSA. When the final whistle was blown, the Columbia TSA won by a good margin. In everyone's mind, however, the NY-TD team won too because it played with so much heart and passion.

Thanks to all players who participated in this year's basketball tournament and for them showing such good sportsmanship. Thanks to all those who helped to make this event possible and thanks to all those came to cheer for the teams. We look forward to see every one again at next year's tournament.
